Laptop Disassembly & Maintenance

Safely open, clean, upgrade, and reassemble a laptop.

Safety First

Laptops are more delicate than desktops. Before opening:

  1. Shut down completely ߀” do not just sleep/hibernate
  2. Unplug the charger
  3. Remove the battery if it is accessible (older models) or disconnect it as the first step inside
  4. Ground yourself ߀” touch a metal surface or wear an anti-static wrist strap
  5. Work on a non-static surface ߀” a mat or a clean wooden desk

Always look up your specific model on iFixit.com before disassembling ߀” guides and screw maps are available for hundreds of laptops.

Opening the Bottom Cover

  1. Remove all visible screws from the bottom panel (note: some may be hidden under rubber feet ߀” peel them back carefully)
  2. Insert a plastic pick into a corner gap and slide around the perimeter to release clips
  3. Never use metal tools to pry ߀” they scratch aluminium and crack plastic clips
  4. Some models require removing a display hinge cover first

Cleaning the Cooling System

Dust build-up is the #1 cause of laptop overheating. Do this annually:

  1. Locate the fan and heatsink (usually copper pipes leading from CPU/GPU to a fan)
  2. Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out through the exhaust vent
  3. Hold the fan blade still while blowing ߀” free-spinning damages the fan bearings
  4. For heavy dust: remove the fan entirely, clean with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol

Replacing Thermal Paste

If the laptop runs hot even after cleaning, the thermal paste may have dried out:

  1. Remove the heatsink screws in the correct order (usually numbered)
  2. Lift the heatsink straight up ߀” do not twist
  3. Clean old paste from CPU/GPU die and heatsink with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a lint-free cloth
  4. Apply a small amount of new thermal paste (rice-grain or thin spread)
  5. Reattach heatsink and tighten screws gradually in a star pattern

Upgrading RAM

Not all laptops have upgradeable RAM ߀” modern ultrabooks often have soldered (non-removable) RAM. Check your model specifications first.

  1. Locate the SO-DIMM slots (smaller than desktop DIMMs)
  2. Spread the retention clips sideways ߀” the RAM pops up at 30?°
  3. Slide the old module out and insert the new one at the same angle
  4. Press flat until clips click

Upgrading Storage

Most modern laptops use an M.2 NVMe SSD. Check the slot size (2242, 2260, 2280) before buying.

  1. Remove the single retaining screw at the end of the M.2 slot
  2. Slide the old drive out
  3. Insert the new drive, press flat, replace the screw
  4. Clone the old drive before removing it (use Macrium Reflect or Clonezilla)

Reassembly Tips

  • Take photos before disconnecting any cables
  • Reconnect the battery before closing the cover
  • Start clips at one corner and work around the perimeter
  • Replace screws in the same holes they came from (different lengths are common)
  • Boot and test before replacing all screws in case you need to open it again
