Laptop Disassembly & Maintenance
Safely open, clean, upgrade, and reassemble a laptop.
Safety First
Laptops are more delicate than desktops. Before opening:
- Shut down completely ߀” do not just sleep/hibernate
- Unplug the charger
- Remove the battery if it is accessible (older models) or disconnect it as the first step inside
- Ground yourself ߀” touch a metal surface or wear an anti-static wrist strap
- Work on a non-static surface ߀” a mat or a clean wooden desk

Opening the Bottom Cover
- Remove all visible screws from the bottom panel (note: some may be hidden under rubber feet ߀” peel them back carefully)
- Insert a plastic pick into a corner gap and slide around the perimeter to release clips
- Never use metal tools to pry ߀” they scratch aluminium and crack plastic clips
- Some models require removing a display hinge cover first
Cleaning the Cooling System
Dust build-up is the #1 cause of laptop overheating. Do this annually:
- Locate the fan and heatsink (usually copper pipes leading from CPU/GPU to a fan)
- Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out through the exhaust vent
- Hold the fan blade still while blowing ߀” free-spinning damages the fan bearings
- For heavy dust: remove the fan entirely, clean with a soft brush and isopropyl alcohol
Replacing Thermal Paste
If the laptop runs hot even after cleaning, the thermal paste may have dried out:
- Remove the heatsink screws in the correct order (usually numbered)
- Lift the heatsink straight up ߀” do not twist
- Clean old paste from CPU/GPU die and heatsink with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a lint-free cloth
- Apply a small amount of new thermal paste (rice-grain or thin spread)
- Reattach heatsink and tighten screws gradually in a star pattern
Upgrading RAM
Not all laptops have upgradeable RAM ߀” modern ultrabooks often have soldered (non-removable) RAM. Check your model specifications first.
- Locate the SO-DIMM slots (smaller than desktop DIMMs)
- Spread the retention clips sideways ߀” the RAM pops up at 30?°
- Slide the old module out and insert the new one at the same angle
- Press flat until clips click
Upgrading Storage
Most modern laptops use an M.2 NVMe SSD. Check the slot size (2242, 2260, 2280) before buying.
- Remove the single retaining screw at the end of the M.2 slot
- Slide the old drive out
- Insert the new drive, press flat, replace the screw
- Clone the old drive before removing it (use Macrium Reflect or Clonezilla)
Reassembly Tips
- Take photos before disconnecting any cables
- Reconnect the battery before closing the cover
- Start clips at one corner and work around the perimeter
- Replace screws in the same holes they came from (different lengths are common)
- Boot and test before replacing all screws in case you need to open it again
